Live Drawing

Drawing events while they are happening.

Live Drawing extends timed observation into performance environments: musicians, dancers, theatre, readings, fashion, rehearsals, gallery openings, parties and public events. The artist works alongside the event rather than reconstructing it afterwards.

The drawing responds to a moment that may never occur again in the same way. A dancer changes position. A musician moves. A performer leaves the stage. The drawing becomes a physical trace of an ephemeral event.

The drawing itself has no stage. The artist is in the room, working, and anyone can look over his shoulder; people do. That looking is part of the format, not an interruption of it. It is not a second show beside the first, just a drawing happening where the audience already is.

Live Drawing also creates exchange with artists working in other disciplines. The work sits alongside music, dance, fashion, theatre, performance, film and spoken word without requiring those disciplines to become visual art themselves. In a building shared with performers, musicians and writers, rehearsals are as much a subject as the stage.
