Two Faces, Red

A two-color relief print — almost certainly a linocut — showing two figures against a vivid cadmium-red ground: a large face confronts the viewer in the foreground while a smaller figure recedes behind it, the spatial compression heightened by the flat, unmodulated planes of black ink. Carved-away passages leave white flecks and gestural gouges that animate the surface and break the hard silhouettes.
